Established in 1897, Banbridge Hockey Club is one of the oldest on the island of Ireland. At their home facility Havelock Park a new pitch has been installed and is ready for action. The new pitch is replacing the old pitch which was in place for 11 years. Banbridge Hockey Club opted for the AstroTurf Hockey Classic, the fastest hockey turf in the world with a proven track record since the 1976 Olympics.

For this project, AstroTurf Europe worked together with Haffey Sports Grounds. The project included the installation of the new E-Layer and installing AstroTurf Hockey Classic turf. The partnership of FIH Preferred Supplier and FIH Certified Field Builder guaranteed quality from factory to site. The new pitch has now been tested and awarded FIH Global status giving Banbridge Hockey Club the assurance that they are playing on the highest possible standard of surface. Banbridge has chosen for a green field with blue surroundings. See the pictures for the beautiful end result!

Banbridge Hockey Club President Jo-Anne Lyttle stated; “Banbridge Hockey Club is one of the top clubs on the island of Ireland providing hockey for pre-school children up to senior teams and to those of all abilities. Through the provision of this new pitch at Havelock Park this will continue in the years ahead. The new pitch will ensure that the club can provide top class facilities for hockey and other sports in Banbridge and attract senior international games and major tournaments to the club.”

The Club has recently hosted what is still regarded as the best EHL round 1 event to date and has been selected as the host venue for the prestigious end of year EY Champions Trophy to decide the best ladies and mens senior sides in Ireland. A major reason for the decision to use Havelock Park as the venue is for the quality of the playing surface for this elite tournament. With the new pitch, goals and dugouts now in place the playing arena is now a world class venue and the Club are looking forward to welcoming senior international fixtures back to Havelock Park.

Eugene Magee, BHC Men’s 1st XI player and most capped senior Irish international player commented; “It is fantastic to have a pitch of this calibre at Banbridge. This pitch is one of the best surfaces to play on. We have been training on the pitch since the project was completed and are looking forward to starting the season and playing our first competitive games on it in the weeks ahead.”

The official opening event has taken place on Fri 31 August & Sat 1 September 2018; Haffey Sports Grounds and AstroTurf Europe wish Banbridge Hockey Club all the best on their new surface!
